What if the point wasn't to relax?
I ask because relaxation is often what yoga and meditation are most associated with. Relaxation is a wonderful byproduct — but when it becomes the goal, we can slip into zoning out rather than tuning in. And those are very different things.
What we're doing together is closer to the opposite of zoning out. It's active. It's awake. We're interfacing directly with sensation — with what is actually happening in the body right now — and setting story, narrative, judgment, and fixing aside. Not suppressing them, just letting them recede into the background while sensation comes forward.
This is what clarity feels like. Not a particular mood or feeling of peace, but a less distorted, more honest read on what's actually happening inside you. Meeting this body as it is, in this moment, without argument.
And this kind of tuning in — practice by practice — is exactly what strengthens the brain's interoceptive network. The system we've been talking about. The one responsible for self-regulation, embodied presence, and the clarity that travels with you long after you've rolled up your mat.
Relaxation may follow. It often does. But clarity is what we're after.
